This is definitely an issue both my pups struggled with. At an early age I didn’t do a good job setting boundaries and would let them play with my socks or other items and this only made the issue worse as they got older. The single biggest thing I did to correct this issue was exercising my dogs! Longer and more frequent walks kept them physically stimulated and decreased their chewing of items around the house.
The second thing I did was to encourage them to chew on specific items. Both my dogs are bigger and can chew through just about anything so I made a point in buying toys and bones that were durable and tough enough to last the beating my dogs would give them.
The combination of these two things has helped eliminate any unwanted chewing and I feel comfortable leaving my dogs inside all day if needed.
